Upcoming Summer Courses : July ~ August 2007
Introduction to Buddhism Series: Selected Topics from Lam Rim Chen Mo (The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment) (Geshe Tenzin Sherap, Sunday 3:00-5:00pm, begins July 1, 2007 for 8 weeks)
Topic: The Characteristics of Karma and Varieties of Karma
One of the principle subjects in Buddhism is the law of karma or mainly the intentional action and its ripened effect. All actions of body, speech and mind created with an attitude of greed, hatred and ignorance lead to suffering. All actions created with the opposite attitude of generosity, love, compassion and wisdom lead only to happiness. Therefore, without fully understand karmas and its effects, one will not be able to abandon non-virtuous acts and stop the cyclic existence.
Topic: Cultivating Ethical Behavior
How one should engage in virtue and turn away from non-virtue after one have reflected on Karma and its effects. There will be introduction to what are the ten virtues and ten non-virtuous actions, what are the four powers, as well as what are the sufferings, and their origins.
Buddhist Tenets--Continue on Sautrantika School (Geshe Tenzin Sherap, every Wednesday 7:30-9:30pm with discussion group starting July 11, 2007)
This is a continuation of the previous Wednesday course on Sautrantika School, which is based on the Tibetan text "Presentation of Tenet" by Jang-gya-rol-bay-dor-jay (the translated text can be found in the "Knowing, Naming & Negation - A sourcebook on Tibetan Sautrantika" by Anne Klein). This work is particularly interesting for the way it threads together a variety of topics that are crucial both to the system of Sautrantikas Following Reasoning and to Gelukpa understanding of Prasangika.
